Genetic Cause
Males get the disease when there is a mutation of the HPRT gene on the x-chromosome. Females do not get the disease because their normal X-chromosome protects them. Those females are known as silent carriers because they carry the disease but the disease doesn't affect them. Fathers cannot pass their x-linked traits to their son.
